Tonga Room

Happy anniversary to Mom and Dad and congratulations on 46 years of marriage!

We make it our mission to expose our visitors to the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar.

The Tonga Room is A tiki bar and restaurant located in the basement of the Fairmont Hotel. It replaced the Terrace Plunge, an indoor swimming pool that was installed in the Fairmont in 1929. The pool was transformed into the Tonga Room's lagoon in 1945. The restaurant was redesigned again in 1967. The Tonga Room is a Polynesian-themed bar with an artificial lagoon, rainstorms, lightning, and lava rock.

We enjoyed some froofy, tropical drinks.

The owners of the Fairmont have plans to remodel or destroy the Tonga Room in order to build condos. The San Francisco Planning Department is trying to save it by designating it a historical landmark.

Here is a old photo of Tom and me sipping on a scorpion bowl.

Delish! I hope they never close the Tonga Room!
